Health Communication

Communication Studies Creative Arts, Literature, and Communication

This course aims to provide a broad introduction to provider-patient communication, mass communication, health journalism, corporate communication, communication by non-profit health organizations and government health agencies, and community / public health education campaigns. In addition, the course will examine a variety of theories used in health communication and explore such national health issues as health disparities, health literacy, advocacy and patient safety and healthcare reform. We will examine how strategically designed and culturally grounded communication practices and policies can be used to improve health outcomes. The course will examine multiple levels of communication (intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, and societal communication), key human and mediated channels of communication, as well as new digital information technologies.
