Develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the role children’s and young adult literature play in literacy and identity development. Students engage with diverse books in terms of genre, format, and representation, and apply course concepts to critique the literary and artistic components of class texts. Students examine the social, cultural and historical contexts that influence various aspects of children’s and young adult literature, such as writing, illustration, publication, instruction, and censorship. Although this course is intended primarily for students preparing for a career in education, everyone is welcome.
