Lushootseed I
The beginning Lushootseed language sequence consists of 121, 122, and 123. LUT 121 is the first quarter of the sequence. This course is designed for any individuals interested in using Lushootseed to communicate. The goal of the course is to support the language revitalization efforts of the Puyallup Tribal community and other Lushootseed speaking tribes. We can do this by increasing the visibility of the Lushootseed language, by making it normal to speak Lushootseed, and creating a welcoming environment for the Lushootseed speaking community. We will use the resources developed by the Puyallup Tribal Language Program on their website (PuyallupTribalLanguage.org). We will begin with the Lushootseed alphabet to familiarize your speaking muscles with new sounds. We will learn basic greetings and work our way up to more detailed conversation. Students will be speaking in the first week. Self-narration and language nesting will be introduced as a method for daily Lushootseed use and retention beyond the classroom. Language nesting is a method of choosing a place in the home to only speak the target language and not English. Domains of daily life are reclaimed for the language and no longer said in English. For example, self-narrating out loud in Lushootseed your daily routine to get ready (washing hands, brushing teeth, bathing, etc.). (Multicultural Course)
